Dr. June Brennan hunts a queen cicada that’s mutated into something that could starve the world. She drags her ex-intern Stella through swamp heat and back-road motels, the girl’s dark hair plastered to her neck, beard burn already marking June’s throat. Rope bites into Stella’s wrists every night while June works her over—hard, deliberate, no mercy asked for and none given. The bugs drone outside the screens. Inside, the only sound is leather creaking and wet skin slapping. June keeps Stella bound to the headboard until sunrise, then they’re back on the hunt, sweat-soaked and still tasting each other. The queen waits. So does the next knot.
